THE NAME OF THE ROSE
by Umberto Eco
Our story begins with Williams of Baskerville
and his pupil Adso’s arrival to a Benedictine monastery. William has been
entrust to organise a meeting, in which an heresy must be discussed. Suddenly a
series of terrible murders endangers the reunion. William and Adso, breaking
the abbey rules, try to solve the mystery. Some days are necessary for them to
follow the track of a poisoned book, carefully looked after by the ex-librarian
Jorge of Burgos.
The most curious characters have escaped from
the author’s mind: William of Baskerville, whose surname refers to a Sherlock Holmes’
novel: The Hound of the Baskervilles,
is an English Franciscan monk famous for his intelligence; Adso, who helps
William to find the assassin, is the narrator and a Benedictine novice, child
of a nobleman; Jorge of Burgos, is a blind old monk, venerated and feared by
the other ones.
I read this novel many years ago and I still
like it. Umberto Eco, the author, depicts the historical moment perfectly, from
the outside to the inside, that is to say, such as physical descriptions, as
the way of thinking. Apart from its historical accuracy, The Name of the Rose
catches de reader form the first moment. A gripping novel as any, it reveals a
complicated plot slowly but constantly. Moreover, some twits make the reader
hungry for the pages of this black novel, which every mystery novel lover
should read.
